Agenda (& Minutes when call is finished) for March 31 Conf Call

members on the call: Laurence Berg, Jean Plaisir and John Engle

A call for bios

John still needs bios from Guy and Melinda and Darnel

Darnel Joseph, representing HASA is joining our committee

The following was approved as a working document describing our core values

(John will create a link to it)

Haiti Salon, an initiative developed by a seven member committee, is about convening people toward furthering justice, peace and democracy in Haiti.

Haiti Salon is founded on the value of open, inclusive and respectful participation. Its purpose is to play the role of facilitator in creating conditions that foster:

Haiti Salon endorses the concepts presented in the “Principles of Healthy Democracy in Haiti” created by the Haitian-American Community Dialogue in February 2004.

Haiti Salon convenes people using formats like Open Space, which reflect these values and make them concrete.

Replication of Haiti Salon

So far, Laurence, John, Jean and Lily have expressed clearly that we hope others will want to replicate the ideas, language and values of Haiti Salon. John is trying to talk with each member (Mirlande, Guy and Melinda) before his meeting in Philadelphia with the group wishing to organize an open space there with similar intentions to Haiti Salon. Assuming that all committee members are comfortable with others using this language and ideas, we see supporting (which could simply mean encouragement) the Philadelphia group in their process as an great opportunity.

Determine Date for Haiti Salon 2007

We're waiting to confirm May 5, 6 and morning of 7th.

Jean's friend has agreed to work on developing a logo for Haiti Salon and to do graphics for a save the date post card. Jean has communicated to him that we hope to be able to provide him some compensation but nothing is guaranteed. John has requested funding from a Beyond Borders partner organization which would provide funds for printing and graphics.

John will do a first draft of text for a save-the-date post card and submit within 10 days.

Future printed material will give information about costs and other essential details.

Registration

John hopes to decide on an on-line registration service provider within the next several days. I looks like acteva could provide us this service at a cost of just 5 or 6% of registration fee. Because Beyond Borders is signing on anc committing to do numerous events and because we're a non-profit, we're receiving a special discount. This will make it possible for people to register on-line and to do so efficiently without requiring a lot of staff time.

We need to be thinking of things like creation of bank account and other administrative supports. John expressed that he will be talking with colleagues in Beyond Borders about Beyond Borders taking some of these things on. It is also possible that AFSC could provide some support in administrative areas.

We will also create registration forms that are downloadable and can be mailed in and which can be sent to people for those who are not on computer.

Other Business

Melinda apologized to John for being a bad committee member ; ) and offered to withdraw from the committee. Her work is requiring so much of her time. We determined that to the extent that each committee member wishes to be associated with the group, that there is no need for people to withdraw because of lack of attendance. We're moving forward and each committee member is participating even if s/he is missing calls by: giving input during individual conversations, talking about Haiti Salon with others, "holding space" mentally for the Haiti Salon idea and lending credibility to our initiative by having his/her name associated with it.
