This is a workspace for creating and developing a new nonprofit

Institute for Democratic Practice will encompass and expand upon [Circles of Change] Haiti program and the work of [John Engle Associates] with U.S.-based organizations

Background:

People within [Beyond Borders] have felt for many years that there is an opportunity to create a non-religious nonprofit organization that would work in close partnership with Beyond Borders. Beyond Borders' mission and identity are Christian, but it's work on education and social issues is not all exclusively Christian. A non-religious organization will advance many similar goals to Beyond Borders while working with a different group of foundations, individuals, and organizations.

[Steven Werlin], (Ph.D.), Erik Badger, (both are friends and colleagues of Beyond Borders), John Engle and Fremy Cesar, co-coordinators of Circles of Change, along with several others have discussed for several years the possibility of creating a non-religious organization that would strictly focus on promoting democratic practices in classrooms, organizations, networks and communities in Haiti, the United States and other countries. Steven Werlin, Director of Shimer College's Haiti program, wishes to be a partner in creating and developing the new organization as does Erik Badger, who is finishing up a masters program in Education at DePaul? University and who currently is on staff at Shimer College. Jean Plaisir, (Ph.D.) who serves on the board of Beyond Borders and is a Professor at Cuny College, is also interested in this initiative and wishes to serve on the board.

During the February 2005 board meeting, Beyond Borders board and staff discussed and approved John Engle's proposal to pursue creating a new organization as described above.
