Notes from a (second) Telephone Conversation: OS World and Worldwide OSonOS (Held April 17, 2007)

Co-Invitors: Larry Peterson & OSI Canada, Karen Davis & OSI USA, Brian Bainbridge & OSI Australia & New Zealand, Thomas Herrmann OSI Sweden/Mentoring? circle Gothenburg.

Participants/contacts from OS Institutes or Groups (representing 8 countries): See full list at End.

Purpose: To explore the possibility of collaboration among OS Institutes (and other country groups) worldwide to support the Worldwide OSonOS and the growth of local and regional OSonOSs?.

What´s up in OS World? Update on Kiev: Unfortunately no one from Kiev could participate in this call.

Other announcements made before going into the content of the meeting: Diane Gibeault reported that the first Francophone OSonOS with an international invitation is being planned in Quebec, Canada for the end of August. Folks from Haiti are being invited. There is also interest growing to hold a Francophone OSonOS in Switzerland/France?.

A 3 day OSonOS with 30 people was held in Israel last fall connected to Practice of Peace. Tova will share more about that conference.

6th annual Scandinavian OSonOS will be held 17-18th of August on the West-coast of Sweden. Eva P Svensson and Thomas Herrmann are organizing the event.

We started the actual meeting with a brief review – See Notes of February 22, 2007 Call, on http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/netwiki.cgi?WorldOSonOS

Summary of Agreements that Emerged in Conversation:

WOSonOSs? after Kiev.

The principles outlined in previous meeting are fully supported by the group. Assuming Kiev is in Europe the next event would be in North America,

• Offers that we know of for 2008: San Francisco, USA. Lisa Heft will not be able to be present herself. OSI US will support and help to track for who can make the offer at Kiev.

• Options for 2009? Israel? Tova doesn´t know at this time. We wonder if there is an interest amongst facilitators in Taiwan?

• Berlin / Michael M Pannwitz, boscop eg expressed interest for 2010. Assuming a 2 year lead time this decision will be made 2008.

How does the decision get made?

We had a discussion about why do we need more structure: The community is larger. Traveling is not as easy as it used to be. A plethora of OSonOS events and OS activities have evolved in countries around the world. Traditionally decisions about future events have been made at the worldwide (W)OSonOS. The group seemed in agreement that this is to continue. Trust the people and the process!

This worldwide telephone conversation among institutes and groups is one way to inform the decisions at WOSonOS2008 and to make the process more conscious. We would like the principles we established at the last meeting to become the accepted framework for decisions, including the rotation of WOSonOS2008 events. They will need to be articulated in Kiev.

It was proposed that the sponsor for each WOSonOS2008 be responsible to design a process for decision making for the WOSonOS2008 coming up in 2 years time. (Kiev will need to decide on 2008 and 2009 if possible.) Those processes may be different in each location. It is important to ensure space for stories to be shared from everyone not the least from those who have “been around” for a while.

We have a responsibility to bring stories and perspectives from around the world in order to enhance consciousness that it is a worldwide event being planned. So we all bring mindfulness to the decision making process based on the principles we have proposed. The decisions are made at WOSonOS2008 on behalf of the whole OS-community.

Given that it is a decision with worldwide impact, we discussed possible ways to include people to the decision making process who cannot be physically present: telephone conference, video conference, webcast.

Those offering to host should, if possible be present. If this is not possible as in the case of Kiev, the offer has to be brought forth by someone who has passion and information to share – to make it irresistible. One idea was to make the offer live from San Francisco via telephone/video.

We also think that the process we are in now may be important for hosts in order to prepare and gain momentum before the WOSonOS2008.

Other ideas in the meeting:

Some other ideas emerged as we were concluding the meeting:

Having a facilitator for WOSonOS2008 who is not from the host country to ensure the worldwide nature of the event, as will be practiced in the WOSonOS2008 in Kiev.

The recognition that having this conversation changes the dynamic for the worldwide Open Space community by increasing our intention and consciousness.

Actions:

• Jo Toepfer, who will facilitate the conference in Kiev, checks on possibilities to arrange a telephone conference call with the group of contacts on day 2, May 25th. The WOSonOS2008 decision will be made day 3. Telegrams could be an option if there are technical problems with initiating and broadcasting to the group a conference call. . Jo has now talked to the Kiev-group: They will check the technical possibilities to organize a tel call to the OS Community right from the conference on Day 2 afternoon. It is not so much a technical problem but rather a financial. They promised to send him the figures on how much it will cost. And he will inquire how we arrange the payment. Michael M Pannwitz suggests that part of the surplus from the World Map may be used to finance this.

• Those in this group who will be present in Kiev will share from these discussions in order to support the principles. This includes Thomas and Brian.

• OSI USA will support, as needed, Lisa Heft and the San Francisco group to get a fulsome invitation to the Kiev event – be that in person or otherwise.

• Non Europe or North American OSIs or groups need to explore inviting WOSonOS2008 to their country in 2009!
