DIVERSITY IN TRANSITION TOWNS TRANSITION WHIDBEY Social aspect. Hunger to show up and discuss the issues in a productive manner. Started and stopped until recently with Pot Lucks with a Purpose - once a month o 5:30-8:30 o Kid friendly o Eat together, convivial 45 mins of eating o Celebrations, Announcements, Offers, and Asks - celebrate a win towards sustainability. Announcements regarding anything having to do with catalyzing the community. Realization of the richness of what is going on in the community. Offers/Asks? create opportunities to give/receive. o Program - not experts from their business, but presenters of resources of the community (1 hour) plus discussion. Press up against our edges - who are we, who are we not? o Every 3rd is an Open space. o Half hour for Action Groups to form and meet. o Approx. 100 people show up every time. o Sometimes do Movies with a Message. o Invite other groups to table each event. Asset mapping groups - Soils, farms, capacity in many ways creates baseline for intentionality. Local economy studying Complementary currencies around the world about to launch Script LETS Took a year and a half to create it. Local energy group Health and sustainability - Whole systems understanding of responsibility for health Governance: Strong purpose statement. Raised $ to hire a coordinator. Not totally volunteer. It's self-organizing. Facilitators are resources. Population is 60,000. TT is about 18,000 located at South Whidbey. Joining with Sustainable Whidbey Coalition who is linked strongly to local government (island county commissioners, council of governance). Public/private partnership. TT grows out of the Permaculture tradition of the UK. Local governments for sustainability - going for many years. Judy Corbett created Village Homes in Davis. Created movement around new planning techniques. TT is an open system. How collaboratively can we work with the existing system. How does TT integrate with the emerging programs with and around government. Catalyst, not leaders. TRANSITION PORTLAND TT is a framework upon which you can hang. OAKLAND Ning site to social network 100 people participating Forum monthly - share food Motif for each night. Updates on each group - leverage points Movie with a Message The Garden (has copy) How support each other's work Grey Water Guerrillas - underground catchment Conversations around policy Updates on garden mapping project with website. No sense of tight-knit community, more of a web. o Diversity commitment - If too many whites show up the people of color don't come back - how create safe space? o Friends with garden projects in Bay Area - none get along. Too much competition. Racial justice consciousness isn't alive in the high profile farms. Access and diversity challenges. Healing histories. QUESTIONS THAT ARE ALIVE NOW: o What is the governance? o What are your learning edges? o How can we engage people through activities that matter, not just listening. o Scalability - natural boundaries. Where soften? o What principles or concepts allow for sustainable systems? o How do we respect our elders and humbly look towards them and learn? o How can we learn from Roberto? o What voices are alienated? o How do we learn to school and flock around this. What is the natural flocking around transition? o We don't know how to do this. How do we engage a whole community? o What does indigenous mean? Who isn't indigenous? What is the quality of indigenousness? o How can we learn from those who have been walking this talk in the past like Roberto? o How do we create deep systems change? o How do we tap the ways of sustainability of each culture/group/demographic? o How do we look for the voice of the least? Republican, Hispanic, Lesbian, Child? St. Francis of Assisi only held a meeting if the lepers were present. Huichols only held meetings if the children were present. o How do we become actors in a complex system whether we are recognized or not? o How do we give ourselves permission to contribute? o How do we listen long enough to contribute? o How can we follow the energy and learn? o How many of us really know what it means to really be indigenous to a land and never have left it - or for generations and have been forced to leave? o How can we honor the not-knowing and keep it alive? o The oil culture allowed the possibility of not being indigenous. How do we re-indiginate ourselves? o How can we re-embrace the ways of knowing and ancestors within our genes and experience? o How do we acknowledge the indigenous in our locales? o How have we co-oped each other? o How can we be patient with each other? o How can we truly listen and hear each other, even when the speak differently, hold context differently? o How do we build bridges to those who want to create anarchy, militias, etc. How do we do this? o How do we find out who the long-time people are, how do we become available to the locals? In S. Oregon, the native people are difficult to find, but the right-wing militia are easier to find. How do we approach them? o How can we find out how we are racist? How can we take it on? How can we have the desire to cross boundaries? o How do we make music together across different turfs? o How do we own our own projections? o How do we create safe spaces for conversations of bridging? |

Transition Whidbey Isle. - Started in Aug 2007 - Unleashed early – 3 monthly meetings of 100ppl – stopped and restarted the monthly community meetings “Pot lucks with a Purpose” There was a hunger for people to get into the room and talk about peak oil.
o 5:30 -8:30 for parents and kids
o People bring food – 45min convivial time
o “Celebrations, Announcements, Offers, Gives and Asks”
Catalyze the community to work together with resource limits upon us
Members of the community have a space
Members bring Needs and Surpluses
o Program presenters bring something to the community that is actionable and leaders try to press people against edges
o Every third meeting is Open Space
o 30 minutes for action groups to form and organize
·Inviting other groups in is a place that has not been as successful

o Mapping the assets of the island

What is the governance like? - The governance model is the purpose statement to set the container. - Hired a coordinator - a weaver - Self organizing – teams and facilitators
What is the population of Whidbey? - 8,000 people south Whidbey - Sustainable Whidbey - Council of governments for three towns – mayors - Education extension units
What are the edges? - It is an open system – How cooperatively and collaboratively do you do TT? - There is an ecology of stuff related to TT that will be TT - Seeing government as an ‘open door’ is being reflected anywhere – government is resource limited.

- There is a lot of completion in farming – farming politics legacy – and gardening groups – whole
What is the governance like? - There is a collaborative commitment and time is an issue - Scalability- Starting with a neighborhood with a container - can you say more than that.
Ashland, OR Transition - We are all part of a bioregion – scalability makes sense on that level. - We killed the concept of community around the automobile - New development using the model that all your needs can be met in a quarter mile
o We are looking at retrofitting out neighborhoods
o Why don’t we have wells sunk all over the area?
